What is Waterside Asset Management?

Waterside Asset Management (WAM) is an independent asset management company based in Portugal, regulated by the CMVM (Portuguese market regulator). Founded in 2024, WAM is the leading vehicle within the “listed assets arm” of Global Income Capital Management, a single-family office established in 2004.

As of 2025, Waterside AM manages two funds: Global Income SIC and Finen Inversiones SIC. While headquartered in Lisbon, Waterside AM also has a presence in Madrid and is comprised of a multidisciplinary team with over 20 years of experience.

Luis Héctor Rodríguez-Navarro Oliver
Board Member

Luis has over 28 years of experience in finance, asset management, and investment banking. He began his career in Madrid in 1995 after earning an MSc in Industrial Engineering from Universidad Politécnica de Madrid and a BEc in Economics from UNED. He initially worked as a consultant for Andersen Consulting and later for Booz Allen & Hamilton.

In 2000, Luis moved to London to join Lehman Brothers, where he worked in the media, telecommunications, and internet M&A practice. After completing his MBA at Harvard in 2002, he relocated to Mexico to pursue a career as a finance executive. Over the next 15+ years, he held leadership roles as Finance Director and later

CFO/COO of the regional divisions of three publicly traded companies: Allied Domecq, Time Warner, and Mattel.

Since 2015, Luis has been a member of the Investment Committee at SFA, a venture capital firm.

José María Cánovas Monfort
Board Member

José María has over 35 years of experience in asset management and private equity. He began his career in 1987 as an Investment Analyst at Agentes Mediadores in Madrid before moving to London to work at Johnston Associates. After earning his MBA with honors from Columbia University, he joined the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) in London in 1992.
After three years at EBRD, he joined the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority (ADIA) in 1995 to co-lead its private equity arm. In 1998, José María returned to Spain to lead Rothschild’s private equity division. Finally, in 2000, he founded his own investment vehicle, Finen Inversiones, initially focused on private equity before transitioning to a mix of private equity and listed asset investments.
In addition to his master’s degree from Columbia, José María holds a BBA in Business Administration and Management from CUNEF. He is fluent in Spanish and English.

Liliana Neves
Compliance Officer

Liliana serves as the Compliance Officer at Waterside Asset Management. She is a seasoned Compliance Specialist with extensive expertise in Portuguese and European financial services regulatory law, backed by a strong legal foundation.

With over a decade of experience in the banking sector, Liliana holds a Law Degree from Universidade Católica Portuguesa in Lisbon, a Postgraduate Degree in Tax Law from Lisbon’s Faculty of Law, and certifications in Anti-Corruption Compliance from Nova School of Business and Economics, as well as a program from Harvard Business School. She is fluent in Portuguese, English and Spanish.

Juan José Rodríguez-Navarro Oliver
President of the Board & CIO

Juan José has over 20 years of experience in asset management. He began his career at BBVA in 1997 before moving to London to work at Lehman Brothers. In 2000, he returned to Spain to establish a series of investment vehicles, and in 2004, he founded his own family office, Global Income Capital Management.

In 2009, Juan José expanded into private equity, investing both through funds and direct investments—most notably participating in the largest biodiesel company deal in Spain. In 2019, he co-founded Growth Partners Capital, a regulated private equity firm based in Lisbon. Over the past decade, he has also been actively investing in real estate and agriculture, primarily in Iberia.

Juan José holds a BBA in Business Administration and Economics from Universidad San Pablo CEU, a Master’s Degree in Finance and Stock Markets from South Bank University of London, and a Master’s Degree in Taxation from CEF. He is fluent in Spanish and English.

José María Cánovas García de Blanes
Portfolio Manager

José María acts as Portfolio Manager at Waterside Asset Management, where he is responsible for identifying, analysing, and selecting investment opportunities across multiple asset classes. He leverages his extensive experience in equity research and financial markets to drive investment decisions.

Prior to joining WAM, he held different positions at JB Capital Markets, CaixaBank, Haitong and Deutsche Bank, covering sectors such as pharmaceuticals, industrials, and media among others. He also embarked on an entrepreneurial venture in the hospitality/technology sector. José María holds a BBA in Business Administration and Management from CUNEF and is fluent in Spanish and English.

David graduated from Universidad Autónoma de Madrid in 1998 with an Honours Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration, specializing in Finance. Before joining Waterside Asset Management, he held various roles at HSBC (Equity Sales-Trading), BBVA (Equity Sales), Kepler Cheuvreux (Head of Iberian Corporate Brokerage), and JB Capital Markets, where he served as a Proprietary Trader in a senior management position.

At WAM, David leads the trading department, overseeing equities, futures, bonds, and FX trading. With over 20 years of experience, he possesses deep expertise in mathematical-based trading indicators. He is fluent in Spanish and English.

José Antonio González Aguirre
VP Trading

José Antonio began his career at UBS, where he spent nearly two years working in both the Investment Banking and Wealth Management divisions, specializing in operations and risk management. In 2019, he transitioned to Julius Baer, serving as an Investment Advisor, providing daily support to a diverse client base.

He joined Waterside Asset Management as a Vice President in the Trading area, where he is responsible for executing and managing investment strategies across multiple asset classes. His role includes analyzing market trends, identifying trading opportunities, optimizing portfolio performance, and managing risk to maximize returns. José Antonio holds a BBA in Business Administration and Management from CUNEF and a Master’s Degree in Economics from Universidad Complutense de Madrid. He is fluent in Spanish and English.

Gonzalo Hortal Tello
COO

Gonzalo has extensive experience in Middle and Back Office operations. Before joining Waterside Asset Management, he served as Head of Middle and Back Office for Equities, Fixed Income, and Derivatives at Mirabaud Securities. Prior to that, he held various roles at Argentaria Bolsa and Fomento e Intermediación.

At WAM, Gonzalo is responsible for developing and implementing Front-to-Back processes, ensuring the optimal use of resources and costs, overseeing risk management and settlement activities, and managing custody platforms and relationships with market providers. He holds a BBA in Business Administration and Management from UNED and is fluent in Spanish and English.

Enrique Albendea Machuca
Head of Investors Relations (Portugal)

Enrique has over 15 years of experience in the Private Banking industry, financial advisory, and institutional sales for UHNW clients. Throughout his career, he has held various leadership positions in Private Banking, recognized as top sales in the Banco Banif Santander Private Banking ranking in 2012. He served as Commercial Director at Banco Espirito Santo and was a member of the executive committee in Spain. Seven years ago, he founded Midi Capital Investment.

He has served as advisor for several regulated vehicles for over 10 years, holding the necessary qualifications and MiFID advisory training from the IEB. He is fluent in both Spanish and English.
